Every year the Grade Nine English students do a unit called Hero’s Journey. They write a children’s story with a superhero theme. The grade nines are paired up with kindergarten students, interview them, and write the story with their little buddy or buddies as the main characters. The kindergarten kids get a finished copy of the book. It has always been a great experience for the big and little kids! The Snakes had their buddies visit earlier this week. Here are some pictures:

Lot’s of great things have been happening this week. Our classroom guided reading (FYI-the students call it “Book Club” if you are asking them about it) and home reading program are back on schedule. We are almost finished introducing initial sounds. This week we’ve done F, J, V, and W. Next week we will do X, Y, Z and Q. The boys and girls are becoming fantastic little writers! If you haven’t yet seen it, please stop by and see the writing on our bulletin board. In math we have been learning about ordinal numbers (first, second, third, fourth and so on). At this age children are not expected to read the words, but to understand and use the vocabulary accurately in context. For example, describe which car came in first, second or third in a race or list the steps in a simple recipe. Today we used our skills in the science lab making play-doh! Here are some photos:

It was great to see the boys and girls working together to get the Bee-Bot to a certain place on the mat. It was very challenging and the boys and girls showed a lot creative thinking and problem solving skills. Here are more photos:
